This app was created to encourage everyday speaking of Inuttitut (called Inuttut when speaking the language) within Nunatsiavut communities in Labrador.
The project was conducted by Alana Johns (University of Toronto) and Rita Andersen (Nain, Labrador) who selected a number of Inuttitut words, phrases and expressions that might enable people to understand and join in conversations in Inuttitut. Our community research assistant Amos Suarak recorded and organized the audio files. We would like to thank the Nunatsiavut government for their help in facilitating this work through advice, space, technical support, etc.
The funding for the project came from Tradition & Transition, a partnership between Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Nunatsiavut Government. This research was supported in part by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
This list of words is far from complete but we hope that listening to them will create familiarity and use.
Please feel free to use this app for educational purposes only.
